Ruth Deutsch stands beside the swimming pool in the gardens of the Centro Hirsch care home. When the weather's good, she swims her lengths every day. Deutsch was born in the north-eastern German town of Neustrelitz, but has lived in the Centro Hirsch home for 20 years. Her father was a Jew of Polish descent. She still has contact with Germany, but never wanted a German passport. "I don't have a home country, " she says.
