Born in Beijing in 1979 and raised in Germany, Lisa Franz is a photographer and visual artist with a MA degree in Philosophy, North-American Studies and Latin American History which she earned in 2006 after studying at the University of Cologne, Germany. In 2003, she was an ERASMUS Scholar at the University of Seville, Spain. From 2008 to 2017 she lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2012 her book "One Year in Buenos Aires" was published in Germany at the Herder publishing Company.
First introduced to photography by her father– a photographer and writer himself – at the age of 14, Lisa Franz was later trained professionally by the Italian photographer Fulvio Zanettini (Laif Agency) in Cologne, where they later shared a photography studio together.
In Buenos Aires, she studied with photographer Juan Travnik, the SUB photography collective and at the FADU University (Architecture and Design). From 2015 to 2017 and from 2020 to present, she participates in the T.E.F. (Aesthetics of Photography) seminars led by the photographic artist Eduardo Gil.
Her projects have been supported by the Centro Cultural Recoleta (selected artist for solo exhibition), the Argentine Foreign Office, the German Embassy in Buenos Aires, Epson and Amnesty International, among others.
Her work has been exhibited i.a.: at the Palais de Glace National Museum (Buenos Aires), the Jorge Luis Borges International Foundation (Buenos Aires), the Recoleta Cultural Center, the German Embassy in Buenos Aires, iSalud University (Buenos Aires), the German and European Club (Buenos Aires), San Martín University (Buenos Aires), the 8th and 10th Biennial of Documentary Photography of Tucumán, the Municipality of Rosario and the National Congress, among others.
In 2013, together with her husband Facundo Barreyra (musician / composer, Argentina), she created the intercultural project "The Traveling Bandoneon", which received the patronage of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was recognized by the same as of "cultural value". The project aims to tell the story of the iconic instrument of tango and Argentine music, born in Germany and artistically developed in the Río de la Plata region. Performances have been held in Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina and Brazil.
In 2020, ECM Records (Germany) selected photos by Lisa Franz for the cover and booklet of the CD "Albores" by Argentine composer Dino Saluzzi.
In 2021, she was selected for the first time to exhibit at the Trostberg Art Mile with the photo triptych "The Traveling Bandoneon".
In 2022 she was selected as an exhibiting artist to participate in the 10th Biennial of Documentary Photography in Tucumán / Argentina with her project "Portrait of a Migrant".
